VAMETCO'S POWER CONSERVATION
SHOULD AVOID FUTURE POWER INTERRUPTIONS
DANBURY, Connecticut, March 31, 2008, —
Vametco Alloys (Pty.) Limited is achieving a 10% reduction in its peak-power requirements at its Brits, South Africa vanadium operations. This reduction is expected to avoid future power interruptions that had plagued metals and other industrial facilities throughout South Africa earlier in 2008.
The plant needs uninterrupted power to maximize the production of Nitrovan® vanadium, a popular strengthener for steel. The product is used by steelmakers throughout the world to efficiently produce high-strength steels used in construction and other engineering applications.
Eskom, the South African electrical utility, had interrupted power regularly at Vametco and other industrial plants when peak loads surpassed its generating capacity. The utility said it could avoid power interruptions if all users reduced their power requirements by 10% during peak operations.
"We are pleased that we are able to achieve the 10% power reduction required by Eskom." said Jan Eveleigh, Managing Director of Vametco. "As long as our power savings lead to no further interruptions, as indicated by Eskom, there should be no further reduction in the production of our vanadium products, This will allow us to meet the needs of our Nitrovan® vanadium customers."
Vametco is a subsidiary of Strategic Minerals Corporation, part of the Evraz Group. The South African subsidiary is a fully-integrated vanadium producer from ore to finished product.
