STRATEGIC
MINERALS STARTS
VANADIUM-HALIDE PRODUCTION AT HOT SPRINGS, ARKANSAS
DANBURY, Connecticut,
January 18, 2006 -
The first shipments of vanadium-halide catalysts were made early in
January 2006 from modern new production facilities at Strategic Minerals
Corporation's plant in Hot Springs, Arkansas. The start-up will consolidate
all of the company's vanadium production in the United States at Hot
Springs, improving efficiency and costs.
The Niagara Falls, N.Y. plant
that has produced Stratcor® vanadium halides in the past is scheduled
to close in February 2006.
The new, state-of-the-art
plant at Hot Springs will be primarily producing vanadium oxytrichloride,
vanadium tetrachloride, and vanadium-titanium mixes. These products
are widely used as catalysts in the production of polyethylene, synthetic
rubber, and other chemicals.
"The new facility uses
sophisticated instrumentation that enables us to improve our process
control and produce a high-quality, uniform product that consistently
meets our customers' requirements," said Hein Enslin, President
of Strategic Minerals Corporation. "By having all our vanadium-chemicals
facilities at the same location, we are also streamlining our operations
to better serve our customers, particularly those located in the southern
part of the United States."
Besides vanadium halides,
the Hot Springs plant produces high-purity vanadium pentoxide, vanadium
trioxide, and ammonium metavanadate. These products are sold directly
to chemical customers or used as the raw material in the production
of Stratcor® vanadium chemicals. They are also used to produce Stratcor®
ferrovanadium and vanadium-aluminum used by the steel and titanium industries
respectively.
